Stomping Out Type 2 Diabetes
February 25
Tom Brown Park

This is a great community event that promotes wellness and acknowledges the growing number of students effected by Type 2 Diabetes. We would like everyone to attend if you have the time this weekend. It could be fun for the whole family.
If you attend, please drop by the pavilion and look for the School Sign In table. The school with the most attendees gets to host the traveling trophy for the coming year. Please support Hartsfield Elementary School and help us show how much our community cares.
You are also invited to cheer on the Hartsfield faculty and staff in the kickball games.
Hartsfield faculty and staff will be playing kickball against the faculty and staff at Apalachee Elementary and Sullivan Elementary Schools.
The kickball games will begin at 10:00AM.
We hope to see you there!
Thank you for your Support,
Cora Franklin

News from Ms. Franklin!
School Day
Our school day is 8:30 AM until 2:50 PM. Supervision is provided from 7:45 AM until 3:30 PM. Please do not drop your children off before 7:45 AM and be sure they are picked up by 3:20 PM. Parents need to remain in your vehicle when dropping off and picking up your children. Staying in your car will keep the traffic moving, allowing other parents to get to their destination on time. If you need to go to the office or the classroom, please park your vehicle in a designated parking space.
Test Administration
Standard testing is fast approaching. Please do not plan any trips or appointments during these times:
- February 28th - FCAT Writing (4th grade)
- April 16th – 19th FCAT Reading and Math (3rd, 4th and 5th grades)
- April 24th – 25th FCAT Science (5th grade)
- April 23rd - 27th NRT (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) Reading, Language and Math (K-2)
Testing Proctors Needed
Proctors are very important to the testing process, providing an extra set of hands and eyes to increase test security and minimize the stress level of the students. One proctor is needed per class. Proctors will not be placed in their child’s class or in a class on their child’s grade level. Proctors help to ensure the smooth administration of standardized testing. If you are available to help on any of these dates, please contact Mrs. Parsons at (850) 488-7322 ext. 105 or email:parsonsk@leonschools.net.
Proctors are needed for the following dates:
- February 28th FCAT Writing (4th grade)
- April 16th – 19th FCAT Reading and Math (3rd, 4th and 5th grades)
- April 24rd- 25th FCAT Science (5th grade)
- April 23rd - 27th NRT (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) Reading, Language and Math (K-2)
MUSICAL NOTES
The FSU Opera Outreach was at Hartsfield Elementary on February 3 to perform Seymour Barab's children opera, Little Red Riding Hood. Our fourth and fifth grade students enjoyed this re-telling of the fairytale classic.
The Tallahassee Symphony is sponsoring a performance by the violinist, Rachel Barton Pine for our students on Friday, March 16. She is a great entertainer and loves to play both classical and rock on her violin.
Hartsfield EDEP Summer Camp!
Summer Camp will be from June 4th-August 3rd. Registration will take place after we come back from Spring Break. The camp will run Monday-Friday, 7am-6pm. Out of town field trips are planned, as well as field trips in Tallahassee.
Literacy Week At Hartsfield!
Wow! What a fun and exciting week we had at Hartsfield Elementary School during the Celebrate Literacy Week. Students kicked off the week by participating in the Million Minute Marathon and several other fun activities. We joined other schools across the state of Florida as we read the book How Much Is A Million to reach the goal of 20 million minutes of reading in one day! Students also enjoyed estimating the number of books in the media center. Teachers took their classes to the media center to discuss various ways to estimate the number of books in our school’s media center.
Students were treated to a “Guess that Book” contest on the morning announcements, where part of a well known children’s book was read; each class worked together to guess the name of the book. One of the more popular activities, was “Guess that Reader.” Each morning we described one of our office staff and their choice of reading material. Once again, the class discussed which office member we were describing. Our exciting week was capped off with buddy reading. Our intermediate students partner read with our students in the primary grades. What a fun and exciting week we had!

Millions of school-age children experience difficulties with learning. In some cases, a disability such as a learning disability can make learning difficult for a child.
The National Center for Learning Disabilities’ RTI Action Network has developed this guide for parents and schools involved in implementing RTI in the elementary grades.
