April 12, 2012 Hawk Talk

News from Ms. Franklin!

FCAT testing for all third, fourth and fifth grade students will be April 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th. Fifth grade students will have two additional days, (April 24th and 25th) of testing.

ITBS testing for kindergarten, first and second grade students will be April 23rd through April 27th.

Reading comprehension is a large part of understanding a reading test. You can help your child understand what he/she reads by using the following strategy:

First, you and your child silently read the same part of a story, an article, or a textbook.
Next, listen while your child summarizes aloud what he/she has just read. He/she might say, “I learned that sedimentary rocks are made from pressure.” After he/she finish summarizing, offer your corrections or additions to what was read. Example: “We also learned that igneous rocks come from cooling lava.”
Then, take turns reading another two or three paragraphs and changing roles. Switch back and forth until you have read the entire story or article.

Vocabulary Practice
Try sneaking in extra vocabulary practice with your child. The more your child uses the words, the easier it will be for him/her to remember them.
Hunt for Treasure. Encourage your child to find and circle vocabulary words in newspapers and magazines, and to read the sentences aloud. Seeing the words used in context will help with their meaning and better understanding.
Use synonyms. List your child’s vocabulary words. Then beside each one, have him/her write words with similar meanings. Post the list where it can be reviewed.

Supervision
Supervision begins at 7:45 AM and ends at 3:20 PM. If you bring your child to school before 7:45 AM, you need to wait with your child until 7:45AM. If you need supervision prior to 7:45 AM, you may enroll your child in the Before School Program. If you need to occasionally drop your child off early, the fee is $5.00 a day per child. For the safety of your child, do not drop your child off before 7:45 AM.

Supervision ends at 3:20 PM. It is important that you pick your child up no later than 3:20 PM. Our teachers and staff have other obligations and are not always available to wait with your child. If you are late, you will be responsible for the $12 drop in fee for the After School Program.

A Good Start

Did you know that breakfast is the most important meal of your child’s day? It provides the nutrients and energy he/she needs to concentrate in school. Research shows that children who eat breakfast get better grades, are more attentive in class, and generally behave better in school. Help your child begin his/her day on the right foot.

A Parent’s Guide to Response to Intervention (RTI)

Millions of school-age children experience difficulties with learning. In some cases, a disability such as a learning disability can make learning difficult for a child.
The National Center for Learning Disabilities’ RTI Action Network has developed this guide for parents and schools involved in implementing RTI in the elementary grades.
